Own Your Florida Lifestyle

Summer can be dangerous for pets. Florida’s climate, humidity, and temperatures can be difficult to experience even for our pets.

With the rising temperatures, we hope this article will help us keep our pets safe this summer.

Never Leave Pets in a Parked Car
Not even for a minute. On an 85º day, for example, the temperature inside a car with the windows cracked can reach 102º within 10 minutes. After 30 minutes, the temperature will reach 120º. Your pet may suffer irreversible organ damage or die.

Watch the Humidity
Humidity can also affect your pet. Animals pant to evaporate moisture from their lungs, which takes heat away from their body. If the humidity is too high, they are unable to cool themselves and their temperature will quickly skyrocket to dangerous levels.

Limit Exercise on Hot Days
Adjust the intensity and duration of exercise in accordance with the temperature. On very hot days, limit exercise to early morning or evening hours. In the city, asphalt gets very hot and can burn your pet’s paws, so walk your dog on the grass if possible. Always carry water with you to keep your dog hydrated.

Provide Ample Shade & Water
Any time your pet is outside, make sure it has protection from heat and sun and plenty of fresh, cold water. Tree shade and tarps are ideal because they don’t obstruct airflow. A doghouse does not provide relief from heat — in fact, it makes it worse.
